Kid Stuff Or Teen Queen Gone Mean?
“You asked what’s wrong with me,
My best friend Leslie said,
‘Oh, she’s just being Miley.’”
– Lyrics from “See You Again” by Miley Cyrus
To paraphrase former teen queen Britney Spears, “Oops, she did it again.” But this time, it wasn’t Spears making the headlines — or being named our Rudest Person Of The Week — but rather Ms. Cyrus, better known to millions as TV’s Hannah Montana.
First, there was the flap about the 16-year-old Disney star’s very un-Disney pics, which many believed to be an attempt on her part to begin transitioning out of teen stardom. Despite having posed for the pics — and having dad Billy Ray Cyrus, himself no stranger to the star-making machine — she later claimed to be “embarassed” by them and apologized to fans.

This week, photos emerged in which Cyrus and a group of pals appear to be mocking Asians by pulling their eyes to form slits. The Organization of Chinese Americans reacted to the photo by saying, “Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian-Pacific American friends.”

Cyrus has responded with a denial, insisting that she was “in no way making fun of any ethnicity.” But as several sources have pointed out, everyone in the photo is making the same face… except the one Asian man. Rather than apologizing, Cyrus opted to blame the media. “I feel like now that Britney is back on top of her game again, they need someone to pick on. Lucky me!”
As with last week’s winner, Rod Blagojevich, this appears to be yet another case — although not nearly as severe — of someone in the spotlight repeatedly refusing to take personal responsibility for their actions.

Miley portrait beautiful.
Miley racism not.
Miley very young.
Miley stupid.
I wonder if maybe Miley isn’t so beautiful after all. There’s only so many times you can get away with crap and claim innocence. At what point does she have to be personally responsible and admit it?
I think she’s just being a teenager. I don’t think anyone can honestly say they’ve never pulled their eyes like that. It might not be nice and I don’t condone racism, but everyone does it at some point in their lives and they probably don’t even think about how mean it is.
I agree. Is there nothing else of importance going on in the world right now?
I agree with both of you… to a point. But at the same time, she’s a public figure and has been for long enough that she knows when there’s a camera, you be aware of every single picture being snapped of you.
She’s a brat!
True dat.
I was so offended by what she had the audacity to do to Annie Liebovitz with regards to the Vanity Fair pictures. By all accounts, Annie is a great photographer and Miley and her parents had a big discussion with her regarding those photos. Her mother, her grandmother, or her father (one of the three, I can’t remember) was on set the entire time… and we’re not talking about hours to set up the shoot here… Annie takes a photo in like 15 minutes, because she’s prepared like that.
I think Miley should have shown a lot more spunk, because if you want to take those kinds of pictures to transition out of teenage-dom, you should show the responsibility behind those actions.
I can’t stand her… sticking her tongue out at the camera when she was on the Golden Globes was just the last shot… and I can’t believe someone actually said that Miley was more mature than Taylor Swift at the Grammy’s.
I can’t wait until her 15+ minutes of fame are up. Or the Jonas Brothers… but that’s an entirely different topic all together. What I want to know is.. what on Earth did Stevie Wonder do to the RIAA to have them make him play with them?
Miley needs her parents to take away her Internet connection(s) with an admonishment that she can have it back when she “grows up”. Her blogging is just allowing her to make a fool of herself. Some parental guidance can go a long way. …she says as the mother of a teen who she hopes makes good choices….when it counts. Not with sugary cereals and stuff like that…
Oh, please. Leave the girl alone. Everyone makes silly jokes like that about different races, but that doesn’t mean they’re racist.
She does a whole lot more work than I’m betting any of the people commenting here do. People pick her apart, and she definitely doesn’t deserve it. Atleast she’s not some brain-washed, desperate-for-everyone-to-like-her teen star like Selena Gomez or something. She’s just being herself.
