The Young & The Hateful

You’re never too young to be filled with the righteous indignation that can only come at the crossroads of religion and intolerance. Just ask 14-year-old Caiden Cowger, who used his right-wing radio show to declare that President Obama, Joe Biden and others were “making” teens gay.

Like his idol Glenn Beck, Cowager is not a stupid guy... especially for his age. Or at least, he’s not incapable of sounding intelligent. A visit to his Facebook page shows a shocking inability to spell or even, for a member of the technology generation, use a program to do it for him. (“I can make deside my own beliefs,” he proudly proclaims.) And like his idol, he appears to find facts of little value. Take, for instance, his website’s claim that President Obama “officially made the month of June Gay Pride Month”, completely ignoring that it was actually President Clinton who made the original proclamation. Something tells me that Cowager also has no clue as to why June (which he says is “no longer his favorite month”) was chosen, what with him being too busy trash-talking his fellow teens to know anything about Stonewall. Then again, one gets the sense that he might well think those being persecuted were asking for it.

It’s difficult to see someone so young filled with such vitriol for his fellow man. And, of course, his callous remarks and intolerant stances are all delivered in the name of religious piety. After all, he has God on his side, don’t you know.

But as we usher Caiden Cowger into the Hall of Shame, it’s not without noting that such beliefs don’t spring forth unprompted. And so, we also make room for the adults in his life who passed on their intolerance and then stood back as he did them proud. Because here, the family that hates together, stays together… in our Hall of Shame.

This kid has a lot to learn. Does he really think anyone would prefer to be gay and
be beat up or whatever. He has a lot to learn about life. How can he say a person was
not born Gay. Has he lived their life. I really feel sorry for him cause if you don't believe
as he does, you are wrong and just wanting to be something else for the moment. I think
he is in for a rude awakening.
